***The Great Rivers & Mountains is a Diptych Mixed Media Artworks. The artwork was selected for the 2024 Goldreed Industrial Design Award (GIDA) second evaluation and a week-long exhibition in the Xiongan Green Building Exhibition Center, Baoding City, Hebei Province, China.
Inspired by the Chinese proverb - ‘大好河山’, meaning the Great Rivers and Mountains on the infinitely beautiful motherland. The proverb is from the essay - "General Admonishment to Compatriots" 《普告同胞檄稿》 written by the female poet, also a revolutionist in the late Qing Dynasty, her name - Qiu Jin ‘秋瑾’. I make this artwork to express my respect for her patriotic spirit, also my admiration for her determination to save the motherland from peril.
The artwork is a combination of collage-made mountains and acrylic depictions of auspicious clouds, flowing water and gold bronze leaves. It is not entirely a collage artwork but a combination of collage and calligraphic depiction. I used the Chinese calligrapy brush to depict the auspicious clouds and flowing water; and the finest brush to depict the gold bronze leaves.
This artwork makes the most of the DuPont™ Tyvek® material and have produced minimum waste. It replaces the ordinary cotton-linen canvas. Also, the mountains in collage patterns is made by the carefully hand-crafted DuPont™ Tyvek® pieces. DuPont™ Tyvek® is a unique non-woven material. It is made of high density polyethylene fibers randomly laid and compressed to form a remarkably tough printing substrate that is ideal for applications where durability & tear resistance is of prime importance.
